Nature by Design is a workbook specifically designed for boosting creative output. It is meant to take the beginning photographer through the frustration of learning the basics into exciting creative techniques. It is also meant to stimulate the more experienced photographer into moving into creative experimentation and into more advanced design concepts.

The focus of the workbook is on you as an individual, your creativity and your vision. That is the important thing. Learning to be your best, being able to express yourself without hesitation and learning the techniques to bring your vision to film is the goal of the workbook. Written in a easy to understand, breezy style, there are exercises designed to teach the concept in practice as well as in theory. In addition, the photographer is encouraged to push to the next step.

Noella writes, “My message is simple I think. You are the important one here. Your vision is the key. You need to have the tools to do the work, but you need to know how to use them to your best advantage. Your creative vision can not be allowed to languish, and you can not allow it to be crushed by others. Learning how to express yourself without fear. Finding the confidence in who and what you are and see will make all of the difference in your photography. The workbook is divided into four sections: The Basics and Then Some; Design and Composition; Inspiration and Perspiration; and Other Good Stuff. Some of the chapter headings are: It’s A Camera! Assessing Your Own Images; Impact! Exercises to Get the Juices Flowing; and You Make the Difference.

Noella Ballenger, an accomplished professional nature photographer, has been teaching workshops and lecturing on creative photography for the last 16 years. “This workbook evolved from my own efforts to learn photography and from the many questions of my students. I didn’t much care (and must admit I still don’t) for the technicalities or the statistics on the fanciest equipment as long as I knew enough to bring my vision to film. I also felt that it was imperative that I develop a method that enabled my students to do this same thing. I began to invent exercises because I didn’t have the answers. I discovered the answers by trial-and-error. I asked the question over and over again.
